Michael Miello, Ph.D.
About Me
I’m Dr. Michael Miello, a licensed clinical psychologist with over 20 years of experience helping people navigate anxiety, stress, and life transitions.
My Approach
My work is grounded in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy (REBT), along with related evidence-based approaches.
Over time, I’ve found that most meaningful change comes from developing three core abilities:
Clarity — understanding your thoughts more clearly
Stability — learning how to respond to emotions effectively
Direction — taking consistent, meaningful action
How I Structure Therapy
My work is structured and goal-oriented, with an emphasis on helping clients make meaningful progress in a focused and efficient way. Some people prefer a time-limited approach, while others choose to work at a more flexible pace. We can decide together what makes the most sense for your goals and situation.
Professional Experience
My doctoral research focused on how individuals with ADHD adapt to the challenges of college life, an experience that deepened my interest in how people respond to difficulty and change.
I have worked in a range of clinical settings, including:
The Department of Veterans Affairs, working with individuals in acute crisis
Hospital and emergency room environments
Outpatient treatment settings focused on anxiety, depression, and trauma
Credentials
Doctorate in Clinical Psychology, St. John’s University
Licensed Psychologist, New York State
APA-Accredited Predoctoral Internship, Ulster County Department of Mental Health
Clinical Training: Queens Hospital Center, Brooklyn VA, St. John’s University Center for Psychological Services
Advanced Certification in Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy, Albert Ellis Institute
Author, The Invisible Toolbox: Coping Skills for Everyday Resilience
Who I Work Best With
I tend to work best with individuals who are:
thoughtful and motivated to understand themselves
open to a structured, skill-based approach
interested in making practical changes, not just talking about problems
What Makes This Approach Different
My work is more structured and skills-focused than traditional therapy. Rather than open-ended conversation alone, we focus on building tools you can use in real-world situations. Many clients appreciate having a clear framework and a sense of direction in their treatment.
A Good Fit
If you’re looking for a practical, structured approach to therapy—and are willing to actively engage in the process—I may be a good fit for you. You can learn more or get in touch here.
